Cain Vineyard & Winery is a boutique winery located high up in the Spring Mountain subregion in Napa Valley. It is particularly known for its flagship Bordeaux Blend wine, Cain Five, made from grapes sourced from the estate. Cain got its start in 1980 when Jerry and Joyce Cain purchased 220 hectares (550 acres) of the McCormick Ranch on Spring Mountain. The former sheep farm was planted to five typical Bordeaux grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec – with the intention of making a brawny mountain Napa Cabernet blend. The vineyard ranges in altitude from 1400-2100ft (425-640m) above sea level, and is nestled in a bowl shape at the top of the Spring Mountain AVA, just beside the Sonoma border.
